How to Drift an RC Car: 7 Beginner Techniques (With Cone Drills)

Drifting an RC car looks harder than it is. On a smooth floor with the right car, most beginners are pulling controlled slides within 30 minutes and clean linked drifts within a week. The trick isn't a secret technique — it's practising the right drills in the right order. Below are seven techniques that build on each other, from your first slide to chained drifts around cones.

What You'll Need:

  • A drift-capable RC car. Hard/slick tyres, not rubber. If you're not sure your car qualifies, read our beginner's guide to RC drift cars.
  • A smooth surface. Tiles, wooden floor, polished concrete. Carpet kills every technique below.
  • 3–6 cones or small markers. Traffic cones are ideal (some drift cars include them). Bottle caps or small books work in a pinch.
  • Space. Roughly 3 metres by 3 metres minimum. A normal living room works.

Technique 1 — Master the Throttle First

Before you try to drift, drive straight lines and gentle curves at partial throttle for 5 minutes. Sounds boring; it's the single most important step. Every beginner spins out constantly on day one because they hold full throttle through corners. Learning what 30%, 50%, and 80% throttle feel like is the foundation everything else sits on.

Drill: Drive a slow figure-8 at 30% throttle. Don't slide. Just steer smoothly.

 

Technique 2 — The Flick (Your First Real Drift)

The flick is how you break the rear loose on a car without a handbrake — which is most minis.

  1. Drive in a straight line at moderate speed (about 60% throttle).
  2. Steer sharply left for a fraction of a second.
  3. Immediately steer sharply right.
  4. The weight transfers side-to-side and the rear steps out.

That slide is your first drift. Practise it in both directions until you can trigger it on demand.

Technique 3 — Power-Over Drift

Once the rear is sliding from a flick, keep the throttle pinned. The spinning rear wheels hold the slide. Ease off throttle → car grips again and straightens. Add throttle → slide extends.

Drill: Flick to initiate a slide, then use throttle alone (no steering changes) to hold the slide for 2 seconds before straightening. Repeat 10 times each direction.

This is where drifting starts feeling controlled instead of accidental.

Technique 4 — Counter-Steer

While the rear is sliding right, you steer left (into the slide) to keep the car pointed roughly where you want to go. Cars with a gyro do this automatically. Cars without a gyro — most minis under ₹2,000 — need you to do it manually.

Drill: Flick into a slide, then consciously steer away from the direction the car is turning. Feels wrong for the first ten attempts. Feels natural by attempt thirty.

If you're constantly spinning out, you're not counter-steering enough — or too late.

Technique 5 — The Single-Cone Drift

Place one cone in the middle of your space. Your goal: drift a full circle around it without hitting it and without straightening out.

  1. Approach the cone at moderate speed.
  2. Flick into a slide as you reach the cone.
  3. Hold throttle and counter-steer to arc around it.
  4. Exit in a straight line.

Most beginners fail this drill for the first 20 tries. That's normal — this is where the actual skill lives.

Technique 6 — Figure-8 With Two Cones

Place two cones about 1.5 metres apart. Drift around one, straighten briefly, drift around the other in the opposite direction. Repeat.

This is the drill that separates "I can slide" from "I can drift." It forces you to transition direction under control, which is 80% of what real drifting looks like.

Technique 7 — Linked Slalom

Set 4–6 cones in a straight line, spaced about 60cm apart. Weave through them, drifting through each gap. Your goal: never fully straighten. The rear should stay loose from the first cone to the last.

3 Common Mistakes to Fix Immediately

1. Full throttle everywhere. More power isn't more drift — it's more spinning out. Modulate the throttle.

2. Steering into the slide instead of counter-steering. If the rear slides right and you also turn the wheels right, the car spins. Your steering should oppose the direction of the slide.

3. Practising on carpet. Some beginners keep trying to make it work on rugs. It won't. Move to tile or wood.

How Long Until You're Good?

Rough milestones for someone practising 15 minutes a day:

  • Day 1: First accidental slide
  • Day 3: Reliable flick drifts on demand
  • Week 1: Clean single-cone drifts
  • Week 2: Figure-8s without spinning out
  • Week 3–4: Linked slaloms at speed

The learning curve is real, which is what makes the hobby stick. Cars that let you skip the curve (heavy gyro assistance, tank-like 4WD) are fun but rob you of the satisfaction of actually learning.

Do I need a gyro to learn drifting?
No. Non-gyro cars force you to counter-steer manually, which builds real skill faster. Gyros are helpful for sustained slides but not required for learning.

What surface is best for RC drifting at home?
Tiled floors and wooden flooring are ideal. Polished concrete (like some terraces) also works. Carpet, rugs, and outdoor rough surfaces don't allow slides.

Why does my car keep spinning out?
